A procession of tow trucks trying to show respect for a driver killed on the job witnessed another serious crash on Saturday.
RCMP said the crash happened in the afternoon on Highway 1 just outside of McLean, Sask.
An eastbound SUV trying to turn into the village, located 42 kilometres east of Regina, collided with a westbound tow truck that was part of the procession.
Police said a 25-year-old woman and 6-year-old boy were in the SUV at the time of the crash.
A quick-thinking tow truck driver then apparently parked his truck across the highway, halting traffic to allow emergency responders to arrive at the scene.
Both the woman and child, who was taken by STARS Air Ambulance, were brought to hospital in Regina with serious injuries. On Monday, police said they both remained in hospital.
According to police, the highway was reopened to one-lane traffic within half an hour.
The cavalcade of tow trucks was in honour of Courtney Schaefer, a tow truck driver who died in a four-vehicle crash involving a semi and his tow truck on Highway 22 during a blizzard on March 7.
