SaskTel Centre is encouraging lacrosse fans heading to the Saskatchewan Rush game Friday night to leave early to avoid being stuck in traffic.
The 7:30 p.m. start time happens to overlap with the normal week day congestion around the venue on Idylwyld Drive, Marquis Drive and Highway 16.
SaskTel Centre CEO Will Lofdahl said with a crowd of 15,000 expected for the game, having fans arrive when the doors open at 6 p.m. will help limit the traffic problems.
“There’s plenty to do when they come out early. They can watch warm ups. Have something cold to drink and a hot dog.”
SaskTel Centre hosting bigger events has exacerbated the problem in recent years with many drivers taking to social media to voice their frustration.
“It is a physics problem. There’s only so much water you can put through a pipe at a given time.”
Lofdahl said they’re constantly trying to improve their system, pointing to the extra staff they bring in for game days, electronic display boards and the installation of traffic lights.
People who want to skip the traffic can hop on a bus. City transit will be doing pick up from the downtown terminal starting at 5:45 p.m. The last bus departs at 6:45 p.m.
People are also encouraged to car pool.
