Saskatoon police are maintaining their finding that a death near St. Paul’s Hospital on New Year’s Day was not criminal in nature.
On Tuesday, police released more information on their investigation into Rudy Kishayinew’s death, just days after her sister Crystal cast doubts on the process.
The update details how officers interviewed a witness who was with Kishayinew during the night, and compared it with video surveillance from a property near where she was found.
“Video observations from the area are consistent with witness information,” the release read.
Police said the video shows Kishayinew entering an alcove in the alley behind 20th Street near Avenue P. They said it was the same alcove where the 22-year-old’s remains were found on New Year’s Day at 10:30 a.m.
An autopsy was also conducted on Kishayinew’s body.
Police said all of the combined factors in the investigation led to the determination that the death wasn’t suspicious in nature.
They also specified the video surveillance didn’t originate from St. Paul’s Hospital.
Some friends and family have alleged Kishayinew was removed from the hospital after trying to get warm on a night where the temperature dipped below -33 C with the windchill.
The hospital maintains, however, it has no record of anyone being asked to leave that night.
The investigation is now being led by the Chief Coroner’s Office, which is waiting on toxicology results that could take four to six months to return.
