For a second straight game, the Saskatoon Blades were beaten in overtime by the Swift Current Brocos. The latest defeat, a 5-4 loss for the Blades on New Year’s Day.
The Blades twice came back to tie up a two-goall deficit. After Swift Current went up 2-0,Braylon Shmyr (19) and Caleb Fantillo (3) scored in the second period.
Down 4-2 in the third, Shmyr (20) added his second of the night before Jesse Shynkaruk forced overtime late in the third.
Artyom Minulin potted the winner for the Broncos 2:53 into the extra frame.
Logan Flodell went the distance in the loss, stopping 26 of 31 shots.
The Blades are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 3 in Brandon against the Wheat Kings.
Blades Trade for Atwal
Ahead of Sunday’s puck-drop, Saskatoon made a move to fill a gap in their depleted offense, acquiring Arjun Atwal from Victoria.
Atwall is a 17-year-old forward who has spent the season with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
He made his debut on Sunday, also his WHL regular season debut, going scoreless but +2 on the night.
