Shoppers across Saskatchewan took to the malls, some braving the snowy highways, to get out and hunt for the best Boxing Day deals.
While some shoppers chose to remain in their vehicles until the stores opened, others braved the elements to make sure they were first in line.
“I’m not a guy who wear jacket” Atinder Uppal said as his head shrunk into his vest to try and keep warm while standing outside of Best Buy in Saskatoon.
Best Buy in Regina was filled with shoppers, some of whom were waiting outside the store before 5 a.m. Televisions, speaker systems, and new phones were at the top of many people’s shopping lists.
Alexandra Williamson was looking for an iPhone 7 but wasn’t impressed with the Boxing Day deals.
“I thought maybe Black Friday was even better, I don’t see anything that’s drastically dropped,” Williamson said. She also thought online shopping had overshadowed any deals stores put on for the holiday.
Jason Nemeth agreed Boxing Day isn’t a huge deal anymore.
“I think Black Friday is way huger than Boxing Day ever was,” Nemeth said. “A lot more deals, a lot more sales, stuff goes on for weeks, nobody gets up or spends the night to get Boxing Day stuff anymore.”
But for Cheryl Hubick, Boxing Day is still the best for finding deals.
“I don’t do online shopping and I don’t do Black Friday shopping so for me, yes it is,” Hubick said.
Even if it doesn’t hold as much significance as it used to, Boxing Day still brought out the masses with shoppers saying parking was one of the toughest challenges they faced.
