Brian Towriss isn’t done with football.
In a couple years he’ll get a call from the CFL commissioner, informing Towriss he has been inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. After coaching 315 football games and winning 196 times, both Canadian university records, he’s a shoo-in for the Hall.
Towriss has officially stepped aside from his job at the University of Saskatchewan, where he joined the Huskies as a player in 1974, as an assistant coach in 1980 and the head coach in 1984.
Although Towriss won nine conference championships and three Vanier Cups, his team hasn’t done well recently in postseason games. Much like Frank McCrystal at the University of Regina, their exemplary tenures ended quicker and less successfully than they hoped.
That doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy of national recognition. They’ll soon join Gord Currie, the legendary coach of the junior Regina Rams, in the hall that honours their accomplishments. Saskatchewan has produced some legendary coaches, players and administrators.
Towriss is near the top of that list.
