Social media has been a catalyst for people complaining about the cold temperatures, but folks aren’t escaping the cold for the sun and beach, until January and February.
“I’ve only booked about 30 vacations south over the Christmas holiday,” said Kelly Klassen with Travel Professionals International.
“The main reason a lot of people don’t go someplace warm during Christmas is the price.”
Klassen said the people who go around the holidays have a variety of reasons for doing so.
“Sometimes it’s family situations,” she said.
“Sometimes they’ve had a death in the family and they want to forget about it and some are teachers who have the time off anyways.”
Klassen said she’s already booked 100 vacations for the new year.
“Where you go comes down to what you want to do, if you want a great price and beach most go to Cuba,” she said.
“If people are foodies they usually go to Mexico, I have repeat clients to Jamaica every single year because they love it.”
Klassen’s favourite destination south is Jamaica.
“I love the reggae vibe in Jamaica,” she said.
“I love that it’s English speaking and I love the culture with the steel drums.”
Golfers Klassen recommends they go to Mexico.
“There are some great courses in the Mayan Riviera and also in Puerto Plata,” she said.
