Full disclosure. Soccer is not “must see TV” for yours truly. I didn’t grow up with much exposure to the world’s most popular sport.
Born and raised in the province of Saskatchewan, hockey was the game that got me through the winter, while the Riders were the team to cheer for.
On Saturday night I set aside time to watch the Major League Soccer Final between Seattle and Toronto.
On more than one occasion my wife asked, “Why are you watching this again?” I explained that we were witnessing Canadian sports history. Toronto FC, now ten years old, was vying for their first league title.
The energetic crowd was terrific to watch. It’s great how the city has taken to that team.
Unfortunately the championship game was decided by penalty kicks. It’s similar to international gold medal hockey games which are decided by a shoot out. It is not the way to decide a champion.
I’ll be sure to temper my enthusiasm the next time Toronto FC goes to the MLS title.
