Two members of the University of Saskatchewan men’s hockey team will get a chance to take on the Canadian World Junior team. Huskies goalie Jordon Cooke and defenceman Kendall McFaull were both named to the 23-man roster.
“It’s a tremendous opportunity and I’m really excited to go there and it’s also an honour,” said Cooke, who also played in last year’s series.
“I think they scored right off the start when I went in and despite the age difference the talent is unbelievable it’s the reason they go on to great careers.”
Cooke is into his third season with the Huskies and carries a 10-3-2 record with a 1.98 goals-against-average through fifteen games in 2016-17. The former U Sports (formerly CIS) goalie of the year will also be joined by Huskies captain Kendall McFaull.
“He’s a leader on and off the ice and we have the same philosophy on the game,” Cooke said.
“I’m excited to have him there with me.”
McFaull, a former NHL draft pick ( Atlanta Thrashers 6th Round, 155th overall 2010) is into his fourth season at the U of S. In 16 games this season he has three goals and six points.
“It’s a unique opportunity to play with players from the different league so I am super excited,” McFaull said.
Six players from CanadaWest are on the team along with six from AUS (Atlantic Canada) and eleven from OUA (Ontario).
The two-game set will take place at the Centre d’Excellence Sports Rousseau, home of the QMJHL’s Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. The games are on Monday, Dec. 12 and Tuesday, Dec. 13.
