Saskatoon’s police chief says people should still feel safe in the city.
This coming in the wake of a report from Statistics Canada ranking Saskatoon with the second-highest murder rate in the country.
“2015 was more gang related, drug related and things along that line,” says Clive Weighhill, adding that random violence remains extremely rare.
“We see very few of them, we have a good quality of life in Saskatoon.”
Statistics Canada also found most homicide victims knew their killers.
Weighill says the overwhelming majority of murders involve some combination of substance abuse, gangs, domestic violence or mental illness.
