GoFundMe for shooting victim's family raises more than $20,000

A GoFundMe campaign set up for a young shooting victim has seen an outpouring of support over the last two days.

The fundraiser, titled Justice for Colten, has raised more than $21,000 of a $30,000 goal as of 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug 15, with contributions from 490 people.

The fundraiser started after Colton Boushie was shot and killed on a property near the town of Cando, Sask. on Aug. 9.

According to the page, money raised will go towards Boushie’s funeral expenses as well as lodging for family coming from America.

Boushie’s death has sparked controversy online centred on First Nations relationships in Saskatchewan, with Premier Brad Wall asking people to stop posting hateful, racist commentary on social media.

At least one witness has stated that the people in the vehicle pulled onto the property looking for help with a flat tire.

Property owner Gerald Stanley has been charged with second-degree murder.

A GoFundMe page set up last week in support of Stanley’s wife appeared to have been taken down as of Monday morning.

Stanley will make his next appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court on Thursday, Aug. 18.
