Evraz Steel is laying off more workers.
The news came as a shock to those affected, as in a meeting Friday morning the supervisor was telling them to “get more pipe out the door”.
And yet by the afternoon on July 22, word came down that 125 workers would be getting indefinite layoff notices.
Mike Day represents those workers at the United Steelworker’s 5890.
“I’ve been fielding quite a few calls wondering what’s going on and why, and I don’t have really any answers for them on that”, he explained. “We’re not sure what is going on with Enbridge, TransCanada, these guys, so the morale is a little down right now.”
The workers are in the tubular division.
These layoffs come on the heels of another batch of workers let go in May.
