It isn’t a surprise but now Regina’s Mayor Michael Fougere has made it official… he is seeking re-election.
Addressing a crowd of about 250 people, with many well-known faces from the council and the community among them, Fougere took to the podium, “I am excited to announce that I am running to be mayor again of this great city”.
In his first term as mayor, Fougere has lead the city during a number of contentious issues: the new stadium, the waste water treatment plant referendum and the pension plan changes.
“I hope I have demonstrated the capacity to lead and have a calm influence in terms of how we deal with some monumental issues,” Fougere told reporters Friday.
He acknowledges there is still more work to do but pointing to a recent survey believes people like living and working in Regina and Fougere wants that to continue.
“I want to be a part of that, I want to continue to bring that energy and focus and determination to move our city to even better heights,” he said.
Fougere will release a “robust” platform in the coming months, but when asked specifics, said he wants to a vibrant downtown with parking needs met, a strong arts community and the continued issue of affordable housing.
The civic election is set for October and so far there are no other names officially in the race for mayor.
