A young offender was sentenced Thursday for criminal negligence causing the death of his friend.
The boy, now 15, can’t be named due to a court-ordered publication ban. He was charged after 15-year-old Dustin Ahenakew was found dead in a home on Avenue Q South in September 2015.
The two boys were fooling around with a stolen gun. The boy pointed it at Ahenakew when it went off, shooting him in the head.
The boy was given the maximum youth sentence of 3 years. With credit for 224 days spent on remand, he has about a year-and-a half left to serve.
The boy will spend nine months under supervision and will be subject to a 10-year ban on possessing firearms when he’s released.
