New Saskatoon eatery hopes to serve up good karma

One good deed, one bite at a time.

That’s the inspiration behind a new café in Saskatoon centred on karma and paying it forward.

“The idea over here is very simple; small things that we can do on a day-to-day basis,” said Vivek Patawari, a part owner of The Karma–Conscious Café & Eatery.

There will be more than a few ways to do some good while taking lunch.

The restaurant will have a karma board, where patrons can buy an additional coffee and pin the receipt to the board for someone in need to enjoy later.

Another way The Karma will pay it forward: three per cent of its revenue through purchases and donations will be given to a Saskatoon charity for three months.

At that time a new charity will be selected by the community to receive donations, and again every three months going forward.

“We thought, ‘Why just target one charity?’ There are so many local charities that need support and, on top of that, they need more community visibility,” Patawari said.

Featured organizations will be talked about in the café and invited to put messaging in the space.  

The Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre has been selected as the first recipient.

The Karma opens Friday on 2nd Avenue north, in the former Café Noir.
