SaskPower crews are working to dig up and fix a broken underground power line that is causing a major power outage in Regina’s Albert Park neighbourhood.
About 200 customers have been without power since about 5 a.m. Monday morning. SaskPower was able to reroute power from another substation in the area to some customers fairly quickly, but others will likely be without power for a total of 11 hours.
Johnathan Tremblay is a media relations person with SaskPower, he said the power should be restored by about 4 p.m.
“This one is a fairly unique case in that it’s under one of our transformers, meaning we need to remove a rather large piece of equipment,” Tremblay explained. “And it does run under some asphalt, so we need some heavy machinery to remove that and go fix it before re-establishing power.”
He said this type of power outage or ‘underground fault’ is more common in the spring as ground shifts, but it normally doesn’t happen to this extent or take this long to fix.
Tremblay said SaskPower can only reroute power from another source to customers on the outer edges of the affected area. For people who live closer to the broken power line, they have to fix it before restoring power.
He noted that Albert Park is one of a few older neighbourhoods in Regina where SaskPower has been investing time and resources to upgrade older power infrastructure.
