The City of Regina is looking at a new way to tackle those icy commutes.
In the new year, it will be running a test of liquid salt.
Unlike the dry mix of salt and sand, liquid salt sticks to the road and can be used prior to a forecasted storm rather than sanding crews waiting for the storm to pass.
“If we are using dry sand, some of that stuff spreads to the sides of the curb,” explained city roadways manager, Chris Warren. “It will help the sand material stick to the road surface immediately upon impact.”
Depending on weather, the test is scheduled for mid-January over four and half kilometres of road.
Liquid salt is already being used by other major cities in Canada.
