It could be a busier than normal holiday season for the Regina Food Bank.
The charitable organization officially launched its ’12 Days of Christmas’ campaign. The goal this year is to collect enough food to fill 1,800 food hampers, which CEO Steve Compton said equals roughly $135,000.
Regardless of size or quantity, he explained how every donation is worthwhile.
“Somebody said ‘does it matter if I throw $5 in the mail or a tin of soup?’ and absolutely it matters because that collective generosity in the community is what helps us do our work.”
Fresh food is purchased for these “Holiday Hampers” which go to families in and around Regina. Besides the rush of Christmas, this holiday season the Queen City is also getting ready to welcome a number of Syrian refugees. That could mean donations being more important than ever.
“I don’t know if we understand what that means yet–the amount of families, when they arrive, what their needs will be. But I can tell you that is something we’re prepared for and we’re prepared to assist in,” Compton revealed.
Campaign collection tables will be set up inside major malls in the city until Dec. 12. Donations can still be made after that time by either visiting reginafoodbank.ca or by calling 306-791-6530.
