Federal candidates traded in their suits and jackets for bright coloured T-shirts and water bottle belts during a session leading runners at Brainsport.
All candidates but one was dressed for a run. Incumbent M.P. for Saskatoon-University Brad Trost stuck with his khakis and dress shoes.
“I might be more of a walker tonight, I’m joking that I’m getting old but I think I’m the youngest candidate in this riding,” Trost said with a chuckle.
Wednesday night a handful of candidates volunteered to lead running and walking groups from Brainsport during the weekly free running club.
Liberal candidate for Saskatoon-University Cynthia Block led a group of runners, giving back to a local business that once helped her reach her goal of competing in a triathlon.
“Back in the day when I was trying to be a triathlete, which I was never really good at, (Brainsport) supported me and helped me get better at running and it’s great to support a local business,” Block said.
Block added the campaign so far has gone by fast and now that summer vacations have wrapped up she’s things ramping up quickly.
“I’m happy to talk about things I care about and I got into this race because of what I was against and I’m excited to go forward because of what I’m for and it’s because of the federal policies proposed by the Liberal Party,” she said.
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has already pledged half-a-billion dollars to fund First Nations education and infrastructure plus investments into Veteran’s Affairs.
Riding the wave of energy brought to Saskatoon after Thomas Mulcair announced an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women (MMIW), Saskatoon-Grasswood candidate Scott Bell said his team is motivated to do the best they can to get a win for the NDP.
“There are many issues that people are talking about and number one issues include health care and in different parts of the city the issues change,” Bell said, adding the one constant is the public’s appetite for change and he’s hearing that a lot during his campaign. “It’s my job to go out there and say if you want change, vote for the NDP and vote for Scott Bell.”
NDP candidate for Saskatoon-University Claire Card and Green Party candidate for Saskatoon-Grasswood Mark Bigland-Pritchard also ran with Brainsport.
Voters can expect to head to the polling stations on Oct. 19
