For the second time in less than a month, there’s a case of anthrax in Saskatchewan.
Laboratory results from July 28 confirmed anthrax has killed at least one cow and is the suspected cause of death in two other cattle on a farm in the RM of Harris.
Earlier this month, two bison died northwest of North Battleford. Alberta also reported a case in cattle in the Fort Vermillion area this week.
Anthrax spores can survive for decades in the soil, and livestock can be exposed during dry years when sloughs and potholes dry up and animals wander into them.
The best way to protect animals is to vaccinate them each year. Other livestock who are highly susceptible include sheep and goats. Horses can also become infected.
Animals who die of anthrax don’t usually show any sign of illness, but the carcass should not be moved to stop the spread of spores.
