Saskatchewan is another step closer to having an independent body regulate its teachers.
On Thursday, The Registered Teachers Act was proclaimed into force, extablishing the Saskatchewan Professinoal Teachers Regulatory Board.
A nine-person board of directors was appointed:
- Chairman, Tom Schonhoffer (Public)
- Robin Bellamy (Public)
- Darrell Burko (Teacher)
- David Carter (Teacher)
- Christina Janzen (Teacher)
- Tobi Tamblyn (Teacher)
- Colleen Norris (Teacher)
- Kyle McIntyre (Teacher)
- Linda Blaser-Fiddler (Teacher)
“Our government is pleased that we have moved one step closer to providing Saskatchewan teachers with the same authority and responsibility as other self-regulated professions in the province, resulting in a more transparent and clear process,” said Don Morgan, education minister, in a news release.
The board is expected to begin operations in October. Until then, they will be doing things to prepare, such as writing bylaws. In the meantime the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation will continue to handle disciplinary matters.
