11:00 – Last week, the federal government announced the first phase of its plan to reach zero plastic waste by 2030. The first step is a ban on straws, takeout containers, grocery bags, cutlery, stir sticks, and plastic rings used to hold cans or bottles together. A new study by the Fraser Institute finds the plan to ban single-use plastic, will be a financial burden to Canadians and will have little benefit to the environment. Ken Green, a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and author of Canada’s Wasteful Plan to Regulate Plastic Waste, joins Gormley to discuss why Ottawa’s plan to ban plastics by 2030 will have virtually no effect on the environment, but could ultimately cost Canadians $300 million a year.
