8:30 – The federal government is expected to approve the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline project today. The Liberal government purchased the project from Kinder Morgan Canada for $4.5 billion last year in an unprecedented step, but the project has languished in uncertainty ever since with Indigenous and environmental groups protesting non-stop against it. The pipeline expansion would almost triple the capacity on the existing pipeline that stretches from Edmonton to Burnaby B.C., and provide much-needed relief for Canada’s energy industry. Dennis McConaghy is one of Canada’s pipeline experts, having served as a VP for TransCanada and authored multiple books on the subject. He joins John now to discuss the effects the approval could have on our struggling oil sector and what roadblocks might remain even if the expected federal approval is granted.
LIVE: Dennis McConaghy, TransCanada’s former exec. VP of corporate development and author of “Dysfunction: Canada after Keystone XL” and another upcoming book “Breakdown: The Canadian Pipeline Debate.”

10:00 – Is child marriage an issue in Canada? Alissa Koski, a professor who researches the subject at McGill, says child marriage is “legal and ongoing” in every region in Canada, with provinces issuing more than 3,000 marriage licences to children over the last 18 years. While Canada condemns the practice abroad, Koski says there has been very little reflection on the practice’s legality in our own country. Koski joins John now to discuss child marriage and some of the tricky ethical questions around child marriage.
