The owners of a home at an acreage outside Saskatoon likely got a shock when police arrested a suspected drug trafficker hiding in their basement.
A 25-year-old man has been charged with drug trafficking after a police chase early Monday morning during which officers reported seeing bags of drugs being thrown out of the window.
Patrol officers initially spotted a Mitsubishi Lancer around 2:20 a.m. as it was being driven with no lights on near Preston Avenue South and Willis Crescent.
They tried to pull the vehicle over as it exited onto Circle Drive. The officers allegedly saw small baggies get thrown out of the car’s window as it slowed down.
The driver of the Lancer reportedly stopped briefly, then sped away from police. From there, the police plane tracked the suspect as he drove out of the city to an acreage on Valley Road.

Officers in the plane saw the suspect abandon the car in a ditch then run inside a home on the property.
Saskatoon police and RCMP searched the home and reportedly found the suspect hiding in the basement. Police said the owners of the home had no ties to the suspect and didn’t even know he’d entered the house.
Police said they recovered 85 grams of methamphetamine in the baggies thrown from the vehicle. They said a search of the car turned up 14 grams of cocaine and a can of bear mace.
The suspect was charged with drug trafficking, break-and-enter and dangerous driving.
