One of the two men accused in the 2015 murder of 23-year-old Troy Napope pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison Thursday afternoon.
Skylar Patrick Bird, 30, received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 10 years for his involvement in Napope’s death almost two years after it occurred.
Napope was shot May 28, 2015, but it wasn’t until April 20, 2016 the RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team located his remains in a slough west of Prince Albert, near his burned-out car.
Also facing a murder charge in connection to Napope’s death is 28-year-old Braidy Chase Vermette, who achieved notoriety following a short-lived escape from custody.
Two correctional officers were bear-sprayed at Victoria hospital during the escape, which ended in a fiery raid by Prince Albert SWAT officers that led to Vermette’s recapture. His matters are still before the courts.
