Winter tires makes for safer drivers: SGI

Sask. has no direct insurance incentive for equipping winter tires, but the reduced stopping benefit can help you win safe driving rebates

Though it exists elsewhere, Saskatchewan does not have a direct insurance incentive program for outfitting our vehicles with winter tires.

Kwei Quaye with SGI nonetheless maintains there are benefits to them beyond added safety.

"It's important to drive to conditions. It's important to maintain a safe following distance," he said.

"Winter tires reduce your winter stopping distance; if you still don't maintain adequate distances between you and the vehicles ahead of you, you might run into those vehicles."

So although it's not directly consequential, winter tires may contribute toward insurance rebates for good driving through the Safe Driver Recognition Program.

Though they aren't mandatory, Quaye said SGI encourages the use of winter tires.
