A man is dead after an accident at a potash mine outside of Saskatoon.

First responders were called to an underground accident at PotashCorp's Allan mine late on Monday.

"Our first concerns are with the family of our co-worker and the employees out at the mine. We are doing everything we can to assist them and make sure that they get the counselling and support that they need," said Bill Johnson the senior director of public affairs at PotashCorp.

Johnson did not give much detail about the accident but said that it is an incredibly sad day at PotashCorp.

"There is absolutely nothing that we place a higher priority on than the safety of our employees. When something like this happens it absolutely shakes you to the core," he said.

Councillors will be on site at the mine to help the employees deal with the tragedy.
