The people of Shaunavan are starting to realize just how close a tornado came to their town.

Reporter Kate Winquist with the Boomtown Morning News says it was a co-worker who looked out the window Thursday afternoon and saw the funnel cloud reaching towards the ground.

"Kinda scary that more people didn't take cover and we were very fortunate that no one was hurt."

Winquist says when the tornado touched down, people downtown were standing outside their doors to watch.

The tornado itself was no more than a three minute drive from the edge of town.

Town administrator Charmain Bernath says she got a call from the fire chief to put out the warning. The school was put under lock down for about an hour.

It ripped apart a few grain bins and power lines before pulling back up into the clouds.
