Saskatoon police seize guns in school investigation
Saskatoon police have now seized several weapons from the home of an 11-year-old boy who police say brought a gun to school on Thursday.
A .45 calibre handgun was fired off at St. Peter's Catholic elementary school on Thursday.
Saskatoon police says that the pistol went off in the student's backpack, with the stray bullet hitting a locker of the fifth grade classroom.
No one was hurt in the incident.
On Friday, police said officers had seized weapons from boy's home.
“There were seven long guns and another handgun that was seized as part of the investigation,” said Alyson Edwards with Saskatoon Police Service.
Investigators are looking at firearms-related charges, but so far none have been laid.
There are no classes at St. Peter's due to a common dismissal day for Catholic schools in Saskatoon. Crisis councillors will be at St. Peter's Elementary school on Monday for students who want to talk about the incident.
Parent finds police, school responses inadequate
Parents had been contacted by the school's principal that St. Peter’s would remain open for the rest of the day.
However, Holly Sabo showed up at the school where her son attends only to find his classroom empty.
"It would have been nice to have someone there to tell us where we can find our child," she said.
"It would have been nice to have a constable there to tell us what happened, to give us some reassurance."
Sabo eventually found her son in the school's computer lab, still startled form the morning's events.
"It was very loud. They all screamed; they were really scared," she said.
The Catholic School Board told News Talk Radio its 'tragic events response team' was at the school Thursday afternoon along with a councillor, and they will be back on Monday.
Sabo says she couldn't find a councillor for her son to talk to, and she is concerned about lingering psychological effects.
