Saskatchewan's new area code could be 639

Sasktel to ask CRTC for approval

Saskatchewan could be getting a new area code and if Sasktel gets its way, it will be 639.

The province is bringing in a new area code in May 2013 and the committee in charge of the switch is going to ask the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) if Saskatchewan can have 639.

Another option had been 474 but that was ruled out because four is unlucky in some East Asian cultures.

“Just like the current area code 306, 639 is divisible by 3. So it kind of maybe rolls off the tongue, maybe a little bit easier to remember,” explained Tate on why the area code was picked.

The CRTC still has to approve the new code, which could take a few months, and they will also decide who gets the new code and who keeps 306.
