Roughriders make moves; release veteran Dario Romero
Dario Romero and his aggressive play are out, but Macho is in as the Roughriders prepare for a mini-camp this month.
The Riders announced the 34-year-old Romero is being released after just one season with the team. He was signed last year from Edmonton. The two time CFL Western All -Star broke into the CFL with the Eskimos in 2001, then spent three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He also played with the Alouettes before returning to the Eskimos for three more seasons.
General Manager Brendan Taman explained the decision to let him go.l
"We just felt with Dario that we're going to try a new younger guy in there and be a little more active," he said. "Dario still can play obviously but with the new staff and new regime they want different people in different spots so he unfortunately had to pay the price today."
Romero is taking is 15-yard unecessary roughness penalties somewhere else.
Other imports released include QB Matt Johnson, OL Clint Oldenburg, LB Alvin Bowen, DB Jamaal Fudge, and DB Justin Wilson.
The Riders are also announcing they’ve signed import defensive-backs Macho Harris, Talmadge Jackson and T.J. Rushing, as well as import quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan.
O’Sullivan is 32 and spent several seasons in the NFL including half a season as the starter for the San Francisco 49ers in 2008. He actually holds the record in the NFL for being part of 10 different teams.
"Everybody keeps giving him a chance so that might be a good thing," Taman commented on the choice.
"When he was in NFL Europe he was a really good player - a lot of CFL teams were trying to get him back then."
Taman admits O'Sullivan's age is a concern but says in the end ability is more important.
He said he believes they will find a competitent back-up for Darian Durant as well as some of the rookies who didn't show well in Florida last month. Over-all he says he has confidence in the roster going into the mini-camps.
The team also picked up 26-year-old Harris. He was a fifth round pick of the Eagles in the 2009 NFL Draft and played for them as free safety in 2009.
The 23-year-old Jackson (5'10-188) spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and on the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011.
Rushing (5’9-186) was a seventh round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2006. The 28-year-old is a return specialist who totalled 1300 combined yards, including a 90 yard punt return for a touchdown vs. Oakland in 2007. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Colts .
We may see some of them at a two day mini-camp planned for next week. Approximately 50 players will take part in practices at Mosaic Stadium on Wednesday April 25, and at the Fieldhouse in Moose Jaw on Thursday April 26.
All practices are open to the public but due to construction at Mosaic Stadium, fans are asked to enter through the east grandstand.
