The 16-year-old charged with second degree murder after a fight in North Central Regina appeared in court Tuesday morning.

The family of 31-year-old Derrick Amyotte, his alleged victim, was there to watch. While the family didn't want to speak, many close to the crime scene have been talking.

They say there are suggestions around North Central Regina that Amyotte was targeted for wearing red. One woman living near the corner of 5th Avenue and Rae Street said everyone she knows is talking about it.

“All they’re saying is the guy was walking from the football game wearing a red shirt and that’s about all and in the hood, you don’t wear red,” she said, requesting that her name not be used.

“I’ve had a couple run-ins with a couple girls, but I said, ‘It’s not my fault my uniform’s red.”

Elizabeth Popowich with the Regina Police Service said previously the victim and teen charged are believed to have gotten in a fight.

“But at this stage (we) haven’t drawn conclusions as to motivation,” said Popowich.

So is wearing red dangerous because of some percieved connection to gangs?

Michael Parker with the North Central Community Association says no.

“I have a hard time believing that somebody would get beaten up, you know, or murdered just cause of the colour of his shirt,” said Parker.

He said he hasn’t had any problems with what he wears in the neighbourhood, but he does avoid walking at night.
