NDP announce long-term environmental plan
The NDP revealed a new environmental platform on Monday that promises to set changes in motion that will make half of Saskatchewan's energy clean and renewable by 2025.
Party Leader Dwain Lingenfelter said they also plan to reduce current emission levels by 38 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050.
"It's one of the advantages of owning your own power company," he said.
"You can actually make it happen."
At the announcement made in Kronau, Lingenfelter maintained that the goal is an attainable one.
"If you look at solar, biomass, conservation and new hydro, it's realistic to get to 50 per cent in a very, very practical way."
Lingenfelter explained that the plan falls in with SaskPower's budget, and all the clean energy would be created within the company.
He said that even if employees lack the necessary technical expertise to make the NDP's environmental vision a reality, he would expect them to learn them from a one-time deal in order to expand the skills base in Saskatchewan.
