It was a shutout afternoon at Griffiths stadium as the Saskatoon Hilltops ran over the Regina Prairie Thunder 37-0.

“The players did such a good job executing, it didn’t matter, today was our day and we’re going to celebrate and enjoy it,” said Hilltops head coach Tom Sargeant.

Key offensive plays from Andre Lalonde, who rushed for 69 yards in the first-half, and Brendon Gryba, the Hilltops were the first on the board with a one-yard run from Tom Shockey at the 3:02 mark of the opening quarter.

The Hilltops defense also contributed picking off Thunder quarterback Asher Hastings twice, with first-half interceptions from Joel Haight and Quinn Pierce.

Regina conceded a safety near the end of the half giving the Toppers a 9-0 lead.

To Sargeant’s surprise, the shutout continued.

“I thought it was going to be a tough physical game and I thought it was going to come down to the fourth quarter,” said Sargeant.

Late in the second quarter Hilltops quarterback Matt Karpinka threw a deep pass to John Trumpy, setting up the home-team with another touchdown, this time punched in by Lalonde from the one-yard line.

The offence kept clicking in the second half with Karpinka hooking up with Graham Unruh for a five-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter; followed by a 40-yard touchdown scamper from Brendon Gryba at the three-minute mark of the third quarter giving the Hilltops a 30-0 lead.

Gryba took it to the house again in the fourth with a seven-yard rushing touchdown putting the cap on a huge game and a PFC Championship with a final score of 37-0.

The Hilltops now await the London Beefeaters in the Jostens Cup next weekend in Saskatoon. The winner will move on to the National Championship in B.C.
