Hell's Angels expected to party in Saskatoon
It looks like the Hell's Angels will be having the final party of their
national run in Saskatoon.
Saskatoon Police Services have created an "operational plan" to monitor the motorcycle gang.
"This is a criminal organization. Hell's Angels members in various areas of Canada have been involved in criminal activity," said Alison Edwards, public affairs manager with Saskatoon Police Service.
The plan includes a stop check as the bikers enter the city limits.
"(We are) making sure that we check their identification and that their motorcycles are meeting requirements under the traffic safety act, that kind of thing," Edwards said.
It also includes a very heavy police presence in areas that the bikers are expected to congregate.
"We will have a number of police officers both in uniform and in plain clothes working in the areas that we believe the Hells Angels will be meeting and staying," she said.
She said that they predict to see them downtown and near the clubhouse located at 1135 Avenue Q South.
To maintain a strong police presence Edwards said that they have brought in officers from out of province, including motorcycle gang experts from Ontario.
"They are prepared to deal with any issues if they arise, but we aren't expecting any difficulty," she said.
The police hope to observe the members to get intelligence and information.
"(We want to) gain as much information as possible to prevent criminal activity in the future," Edwards said.
For other motorcycle enthusiasts in the city it could lead to clashing or recruiting.
"That's always a possibility but we certainly are prepared to deal with it if it becomes an issue," Edwards said.
She said that the police are not expecting any problems. RCMP Sgt. Paul Dawson agreed.
"We certainly don't expect any trouble but if there are any calls from that group or from citizens we will respond to that," Dawson said.
RCMP and police said that people should not be concerned, but they should be aware.
"We want to make sure that the public is aware of what is happening so they aren't surprised when they see a group of Hells Angels riding in on motorcycles," Edwards said.
"But the police will be there. They may not be visible but they will be present."
