FSIN Vice Chief Morley Watson requested the removal of Yorkton incumbent Greg Ottenbreit from the Saskatchewan Party following remarks he made at a forum on October 19, wherein he suggested that resource revenue-sharing with First Nations would be used to buy drugs and alcohol.

Watson said that the comments would cause the public to form wrong opinions and reinforce negative stereotypes of First Nations people.

"I don't know how any government could have a person represent them that has such biased views of a group of people."

He doesn't think there's any coming back from the words that Ottenbreit said.

Yorkton Tribal Chief Gilber Panipekeesick and forum attendee Alyssa Lerat echoed the sentiment, and the call for Ottenbreit's removal.

Brad Wall defended the incumbent Ottenbreit on Monday, focusing on his quickness to realize it was "the wrong thing to say."

Ottenbreit has made an official apology, but said he doesn't recall exactly what his remarks were.

Ottenbreit's statements transcribed

News Talk Radio has received a transcription of Ottenbreit’s statements made in response to a question at a candidate’s forum in Yorkton.

"How do you feel about a government negotiating the royalty structure, the royalties of the province to minorities and special interest groups," asked an audience member.

After NDP candidate Chad Blenkin answered, Ottenbreit gave his response.

"Well I sincerely agree with Chad on one thing and that is engaging the First Nations people in education, training and the economy because that is the most important thing," said Ottenbreit.

"If you talk to - I have a lot of First Nations friends, I'll talk to them about this quite a bit and they'll tell you that like the handouts, the money that comes so free and easy, all it does is go to quite often drugs and alcohol and other things and creates more social issues."
