City of Regina considering takeover to run exhibition grounds
The City of Regina could be taking over the group that runs the exhibition grounds at Evraz Place.
Councillor Mike O'Donnell has told the Leader Post that one reason behind the move is the plan to build a new stadium on that land.
City administrators are recommending council approve a new structure for Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL). That is the member-group that organizes and runs WHL hockey, trade shows, and the annual exhibition on the city-owned Evraz Place land.
Monday night, council was asked to consider making the Exhibition Association a city-owned, non-profit organization. The city currently appoints two people to serve on REAL's board of directors but administration staff suggest that model is outdated and the change would make the group more transparent and accountable
Council decided to postpone a decision until the people at Evraz can discuss the takeover with their employees and stakeholders.
The Leader Post reports that councillor Mike O'Donnell has made it clear that the plan to build a new stadium at Evraz is part of the decision.
