Chris Getzlaf signs contract extension with Riders
A key member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders has been locked in for another few years.
The team officially announced Wednesday that they've signed receiver Chris Getzlaf to a contract extension.
"It's real nice that now it's out there," said Getzlaf. "It came up on Twitter a few days ago, so I'm glad that it's out there and taken care of."
Getzlaf joined the team in 2008 in a trade with the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Since then he's progressively improved, including a career year last year where he picked up near 1100 yards receiving, and 10 touchdowns.
"Anytime you look at a season like last year, you always have a lot to improve on," said Getzlaf. "Both personally and as a team."
Specifically Getzlaf said that he wants to get off to a faster start this season. Feeling that he dropped too many passes at the start of last year.
The Regina native also said that he had no plans to ever test free agency.
"I'm happy that it got done before the season started, but had it not I'm sure we would have come to some sort of deal by the start of next season," said Getzlaf.
For the Riders, it's just another core member of the team that has signed a contract extension, including quarterback Darian Durant and receiver Weston Dressler.
"Played with those guys for numerous years," said Getzlaf. "I think that coming in the new coaching staff and everything has done a great job."
Speaking of the Coach, Corey Chamblin is pretty happy to see guys like Getzlaf stick around in his first year on the sidelines.
"That's good to see that, that there's a core," said Chamblin. "I think there's some guys that we've added that have some youth and spring in their legs that will let us do some good things over the next couple of years."
Chamblin was also asked if it was relief to get the deal out of the way before the season started. He joked that he wasn't seeing any of the money so it made no difference to him.
The team hasn't released any details, but the contract believed to be for two years with an option.
