Cancer Agency workers protest at Premier's Dinner
A picket line outside of the Premier's Dinner Thursday night by Cancer Agency workers was short lived. Police escorted the group off of Evraz Place property after a 45 minute demonstration.
The workers were attempting to raise the profile of their fight for a new contract. They've been without a contract since New Year's Eve 2009.
SGEU negotiation committee co-chair Trent Edwards admits the picket line was a spur-of-the-moment decision. They thought demonstrating outside the Premier's dinner would be a great opportunity.
Police officers were called in by Evraz management, who then asked the picketers to leave. They did, and set up in a new spot along Elphinstone Street.
"We've been trying to take the high road from the beginning, and that's why we've been pushing for arbitration for over a year now," Edwards said.
Workers are still unhappy with their employer's final contract offer. Edwards says they're taking it to members for a vote next week and asking them to reject it.
