Cabela's grand opening 'sends a signal' to other retailers to invest in Sask.
The opening of Cabela's Incorporated, Saskatoon's newest sporting goods store, sends a signal to other big name retailers across the country to invest in the province, says Saskatchewan's Premier Brad Wall.
Wall, who was in attendance of Cabela's grand opening on Thursday along with several hundred eager shoppers, believes the new location - the third in Canada - will encourage more businesses to capitalize on the opportunities in Saskatchewan.
"The economy is growing and we have a lot of outdoor enthusiasts in the province and great fishing and hunting here," said Wall outside the 50,000 square foot Preston Crossing location.
"(The opening) sends a signal to (retailers) that this is a great place to be right now."
Wall was joined by Mayor Don Atchison who was there for the store's bow and arrow ribbon "cutting" ceremony.
"They've had three days of pre-openings and it's been super successful," Atchison said. He added that it's great to see Saskatoon Police Services out and helping to ensure that shoppers get in and out of the area safely and quickly.
Until Sunday, police are advising motorists to expect delays as traffic volume is expected to swell in the Preston Crossing area.
"With the grand opening of a new retail outlet at Preston Crossing North beginning Thursday morning, traffic volumes are expected to be higher than normal on Circle Drive North, Attridge Drive, and Preston Avenue North," said a press release from Saskatoon police.
To dodge the anticipated traffic jam, a handful of avid shoppers camped outside the store early Thursday morning, including Ernie Ahrands and his grandson Josh Slawinski who were first in line.
"(My grandson) said, 'I'll be here at 6 a.m.' so I looked at him and said, 'I'll join you'," Ahrands said.
"We're going to do some good hunting this year and so my grandson is going to buy a couple of rifles."
Cabela's will be open until 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, until 7 p.m. on Saturday, and until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
