Bear Safety in Saskatchewan

Playing dead not the best option

Playing dead during a bear attack may have saved a woman's life in Yellowstone National Park.  But one conservation officer says if that happened in Saskatchewan, the woman would be dead.

Sask Environment's Bonnie Green says we only have Black Bears in the province.

"If an attack does occur and no escape is possible, you should defend yourself by any means possible. We do not suggest playing dead for Black Bears," said Green.

If you end up face to face with a Black Bear, she suggests dropping an article with a scent as a distraction.  If you have to defend yourself, she suggests going after the snout, face or eyes.

Another good tip is to take the necessary precautions to avoid encounters with bears.  She says it's important to store food safely so bears won't catch a scent.
