Dangerous Stretch of Highway

Intersection under review

It's not the first time this intersection has lead to tragedy. Today's fatal accident just north of Martensville is the second in about eight months.
And the Department of Highways is looking at what it can do to make that stretch of highway safer. It happened at 6:30 this morning along Highway 12 south, and junction 305, just north of Martensville. Early indications suggest the driver of the westbound vehicle was killed when he missed a stop sign. He was broadsided by southbound vehicle. Sergeant Warren Gherasim feels more needs to be done to make the intersection safer.

"Certainly there have been a number of assessments made at that intersection by the department of highways, and by the police. There does not seem to be an immediate solution to the problems there," said Gherasim.

The Department of Highway is looking at reworking the design of the intersection to make it safer. Until then, R-C-M-P say they'll be keeping a close eye on it.

"We are aware that that intersection has been problematic for this type of occurences . We'll focus our enforcement efforts, and strategies in that area," said Gherasim.

At the family's request, police are not releasing the victims name.
