Saskatoon grandparents show support for LGBT community
About 30 people gathered at
Saskatoon City Hall today for the raising of the rainbow pride flag, symbolizing
the official kick-off to this year's Pride Festival.
Wearing supportive
t-shirts and waving miniature versions of the pride flag, Rose Rogers and her
husband Tom brought their grandchildren to the event.
"I believe very
strongly that gay people are very important to the world," said Rogers, adding
she's learned a lot about acceptance after some of her nieces and nephews came
out as gay and lesbian.
She recounted a story about introducing herself
as a Catholic to a queer teen.
"This girl said to me 'don't you dare
speak to me about churches and God, because the churches say that we're all
going to hell.' That just really broke my heart because I think that God loves
and respects them as much as me."
The couple said it is important to show
their support, admitting not everyone in their family shares their
view.
"We support all people being equal and deserving the respect of
society, and that's why we're here, and that's why our grandchildren are here
and that's why we'll always be here," said Tom.
Saskatoon Pride Festival events run all week and include a queer cinema
night, a carnival dance and several talks and discussions. The last event is the
pride parade on Saturday, June 16.
