Saskatoon isn’t ready for a plastic bag ban, says Councillor Randy Donauer.
The Ward 5 councillor was commenting on the recent decision by Toronto’s city council to nix the single-use shopping bags.
Mandatory recycling was a very divisive issue in Saskatoon so “I think there would be very little support for a legislated ban on plastic bags” he said. Instead, Donauer believes education and introducing incentives to reduce waste is the better way to go.
“Let people know about the harm in using excessive amounts of things that can’t be recycled and don’t decompose,” he said.
In March, Plastic Free Saskatoon called for a ban on plastic bag, saying they’re bad for the environment.
The proposed ban was scrapped by city council.
