THE NEED:  Christmas is the one time of the year where families and children should be able to count on something just a bit special.  The families that benefit from CKOM’s Adopt A Family come from a variety of circumstances- homes where a parent has recently been laid off, single parent homes, and/or low-income households. The demand grows every year, and with the amazing support of Saskatoon people, the program grows with it.

HOW IT WORKS:
To Be Adopted:
Families in need can apply to be adopted with the Salvation Army between November 12th & December 14th. Families must either apply in person (339 Ave C South S7M 1N5) or call 242-6833.

To Adopt a Family:
Step 1: Register to adopt a family: Click here to download the form to Adopt a Family.
From November 12th until December 14th, businesses or families interested in adopting can download an adoption form.
You will be matched with a family that most closely suits your request. For example, some listeners may want to contribute to single parent families while others want to help families who have children the same age as their own kids.
Step 2: Email the adoption form to adoptafamily@newstalk650.com. If you do not have email, you may drop or mail the form off to Rawlco Radio (715 Saskatchewan Crescent West, S7M 5V7).
Once you have submitted the adoption form, you will be notified that your form has been received. It can take up to a week or more to find a proper match for your request. Please be patient.
Step 3: We will contact you & provide all the information needed to shop for your family!
Please ensure you follow the guidelines (see below)
Step 4: All hampers must be delivered directly to your family by Sunday, December 16th. If you have tried and are unsuccessful in delivering, you may drop your hamper off to The Salvation Army (339 Ave C South S7M 1N5).
Step 5: When the package is delivered, ensure the ‘Delivery Receipt’ is signed by both the Adopted Family and yourself. Please fax (477-0002), email adoptafamily@newstalk650.com or drop off the ‘Delivery Receipt’ to Rawlco Radio (715 Saskatchewan Crescent West).

Guidelines

  • Adopting a family means providing a Christmas meal for the entire family and gifts for the children.
  • We suggest spending $50.00 on food per person & spending $50.00 on gifts per child.
For Example: If you adopt a family of four (2 Adults & 2 Children) Adult 1=$50.00 food, Adult 2=$50.00 food, Child 1=$100.00 ($50.00 food & $50.00 gift), Child 2=$100.00 ($50.00 food & $50.00 gift). Adopting a family of four will cost $300.00.
  • It is your responsibility to connect with your family and arrange a date for delivery. We suggest Sunday, December 16th.
  • If you have any questions call 477-9267 or email adoptafamily@newstalk650.com. We will return your call or email within 24 hours.

UNABLE TO ADOPT A FAMILY BUT  STILL WANT TO MAKE A DONATION?
If you are unable to Adopt a Family for Christmas, you can still help by making a monetary donation to the program, and we can make arrangements to provide gift cards for gifts and food to families in need.  Through a partnership with the Saskatoon Community Foundation, tax receipts can be issued for monetary donations.   Visa, MasterCard, and cheques will be accepted.

HISTORY:  Long time Morning Team Brent Loucks and Penney Murphy created the Adopt A Family program in 1988- bringing businesses, communities, families and individuals together to help less fortunate Saskatoon and area families.

The growth of the program in twenty four years has been astounding! $5000 was raised in 1988 and over $177,000 in cash, food and gifts was raised in 2011.  More than 300 families, including 750 children, received gifts and wonderful meals for Christmas.  There are many incredible examples of children who received gifts through CKOM’s Adopt A Family program, and were so emotionally impacted by the random act of kindness, that as adults have chosen to help another local family.
