Partial roof collapse at Saskatoon strip mall

 

Heavy snow caused a partial roof collapse at a local strip mall Saturday afternoon.

Fire crews responded to a call at 3730 Deifenbaker Drive around 11:45 a.m.

Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team members shored up the roof, which had dropped about 4 feet.

Battalion Chief Marc DeGirolamo said firefighters arrived within 2 minutes of getting called. 

Fire breaks out in third floor of Regina apartment building

Regina fire crews were hard at work Sunday night putting out a blaze at an apartment building on Parliament Avenue.

The fire started in a third floor suite of the building at 2821 Parliament Ave, a couple blocks west of Albert near Rae Street.

Everyone in the 12-unit building got out fine and the blaze was contained to just that one suite.

There is still no word on what caused the fire.

Semi hauling gasoline catches fire at Swift Current gas station

The manager of Transport City Esso in Swift Current is thanking his lucky stars today.

A semi in the parking lot, carrying a load of gasoline and diesel fuel caught on fire around 4 a.m.
Bret Shatosky said the transport truck was out front, on the south side of his building.

"It was smoking for all it's worth," he exclaimed.

Cause of third fire at Regina Co-op refinery faulty vent plug

A vent plug failed causing a fire damaging buildings and equipment at the Co-op Refinery last month in Regina, the third significant fire at the refinery in the last year and a half.

The latest fire started around midnight Feb. 11 when a carbon steel vent plug failed because of sulfidation, a type of chemical reaction. The Regina Fire Department says this led to extreme pressure and extremely high temperatures which caused the fire.

Red Cross helping families displaced by fire on Thunderchild First Nation

More than 13 families lost their home in a fire on the Thunderchild First Nation Monday.

The building that caught fire, called the "Tech," housed a classroom, business area, and a number of suites.

"Some people didn't even know there was a fire," said Shania, a woman who lives on the First Nation, "like my cousin.  Her daughter, husband and her were in their unit.  They heard people making a lot of noise and yelling.  They opening the door to a gust of smoke - thick, black smoke."

The homes are quiet now but three different houses on Robinson Street went up in flames at different points this week.  Now, Regina Police Service is investigating them as suspicious.
 
The latest fire was at 1045 Robinson Street on Thursday night. Besides the police tape and a few boarded up windows, from the street you wouldn't be able to tell there had been a fire; there's even a tire swing still hanging from the tree in the front yard.

What was once a home is now a blackened, hallowed shell after a fire destroyed a home on Lorne Street near 6th Avenue North Thursday afternoon.

Regina Fire and Protective Services got a 911 call about a home that had heavy flames and smoke, located a few blocks south of the Northgate Mall.

Dale Lakeman lives in an apartment building on the street, and said the smoke was so thick that he couldn't see where it was coming from.  He drove closer to the scene to try and get an idea of what was happening.

Man seen fleeing from a Regina house fire Monday

Regina Fire and Protective Services are looking for a man who ran from a burning home after trying to put out the flames with snow Monday night.

Just after 8:00 p.m., fire crews raced to the 900 block of Robinson Street where a home was fully engulfed in flames.

Victims of Yellow Creek house fire identified

The two victims of a fatal house fire near Yellow Creek on Valentine’s Day have been identified as Marlene and Stephen Tokarchik.

The family granted the coroner permission to release the names of the people who lived in the house.
 
According to RCMP, the exact cause of the fire in Yellow Creek may never be known due to the amount of the property that was burned. The fire stayed so hot that fire investigators couldn't properly take a look inside until the following day.

RCMP said foul play has been ruled out.

Restaurant in Lafleche goes up in flames

A combination store and restaurant in Lafleche near Gravelbourg and went up in flames over the noon hour.

Kelly Caragata drove into town a short while ago to check on the damage.

"It looks like the store Merchandise on Main is almost burnt to the ground. Fire crews are putting water on it looks like just to keep it from jumping," said Caragata.
