Loud Motorcycles
I feel that loud motorcycles are not needed for increased safety. If this was true, then why is it that you never see loud BMW's or large 650cc scooters roaring around trying to show off.
Loud bike owners are just insecure people who probably shouldn't be on a bike in the first place.
Well all of these people who
Well all of these people who are writing in saying"loud pipes dont save lives" Don't understand what it takes to ride a bike on Todays roads. I am on both sides of the fence because I agree with Kalvin( I think thats correct). But I of course am not silly enough to believe that the ledgeslation that the city is trying to bring forth has ANYTHING what so ever to do with a decible count. This is just another case of discrimination against bikers of any size, make, model, and type. The city and the police want more ways to harrass bikers until they are no longer on the streets. Last year it was reflectors this year it is noise. They did not do enough in raising insurance rates? Of course not. I as a bike rider face the reality of being pulled over at least 5-10 times, as was the case last season. It is nothing more than an excuse and of course they will put it through because of clowns like Prebble who want to live their life in the city, without the smoke from their bakyard fire pits and the bubble wear there is NO NOISE or perfume, with the ability to finally be safe from the evil peanut. I know I know this is all rambling but if they cannot live with a loud bike going by for on average 5 seconds before it is not too loud. Then Give everyone Ear plugs.....dont like it dont listen. BUT QUIT TRYING TO FORCE YOUR WILL ON ME WITH SILLY LAWS AND BYLAWS. And as I writing this I hope that the 650 team does its DUE DILIGENCE in the matter that was another motorcycle accident with the young lady being charged with failing to yield..Check with her, DID SHE SEE AND HEAR THAT motorcycle rider?
Thank you for your time and wonderful station
Jason
I completely agree this is
I completely agree this is just another way to discriminate against bikers. Are they enforcing the noise of trucks, cars and vehicle stereos too? Just another reason to harass bikers....
Bikers do so much good in the community - just look at the Toy Runs and the charity runs including the Ride for Dad. Huge community awareness and phenomenal funds raised for important charities/disease research.
Drivers, in general, are horrible out there! No one even uses signal lights anymore.... there are so many other infractions out there and the targeting of "loud pipes" is utterly ridiculous. Why not put the money from enforcing this idiotic idea and put it in to educating people on how to use a merge lane, use their signal lights and practicing how to shoulder check. Honestly, a useless law when so many other traffic issues are of greater importance in keeping us all safe - whether in a car or on a bike.
So he is building a list of
So he is building a list of loud motorcycle owners who don't want tickets when they driver around ? I want to bang pots and pans for my safety in the bedroom, where's my petition?
Poor Excuse
If you require loud pipes to stay safe while riding, you're doing something wrong. I ride, love it, love lots of different styles of bikes, but I hate loud exhaust on any vehicle, not just bikes.
As a rider, you have to ride defensively and assume other drivers don't see you. Adding loud pipes isn't going to change that. I've had two close encounters, both times drivers of cars failing to abide by traffic laws. Wouldn't have mattered how loud my exhaust was, if I wasn't predicting what that driver might (or might not) do, there would have been an accident.
Learn to ride properly and loud exhaust won't be necessary.
Learn to ride properly??
TO Andrew:
Learn to ride properly?? HAH!! What about the idiots on the road?? Today, as I was on my way to work on my bike, I turned the corner only to find some idiot backing up right into my path. To avoid a direct and nasty hit with the SUV, I threw myself on the ground putting myself under the bike. The guys vehicle ended up with a brokem t-light and dented bumper. He was in the wrong. He said he didn't see or "HEAR" me. Now I think loud pipes may have helped me.
Thats my 2 cents....
Poor Excuse
I absolutely agree with you. I drive a transit bus and see bad drivers everywhere. Sometimes the sound of a motorcycle being cracked open can startle you and that probably isn't the safest thing either. Some of these loud vehicles you can here from 8 - 10 blocks away. If that isn't excessive i don't know what is.
In my opinion as a rider and
In my opinion as a rider and a vehicle driver you can be as defensive as you want there is still that dipstick with his/her stereo too loud, cell phone ringing, dvd player playing we can only protect ourselves so much, eventually we need to rely on the other drivers to be aware of us as well, cant count how many times i have almost been driven over at a red light or cut off because sombody cant take 2 miliseconds out of there life to pay attention to the road or make sure someone is not there. Wake up people, there is room for us all, if loud exhaust is going to save us, then so be it, if they want to pass a noise bylaw it should be for everything on the road including car stereos. i think they are more noisy than bikes and more distracting for the driver of that vehicle.
I enjoy the sound of a nice
I enjoy the sound of a nice fee flowing rumbly exhaust but 80% of harley riders exceed the threshold of where sounding nice just becomes loud, abnoxious, and annoying. If you want to be noticed, ride with your high beam headlight on during the day, not sure if thats a recommendation in the Motorcycle Handbook here but I know it IS THE LAW in several US States.
If loudness makes bikes so
If loudness makes bikes so safe, why not make the exhaust loud on every vehicle - particularly smaller ones like smart cars, etc. Or better yet, have everyone honk their horns as they drive down the street - that ought to make sure people know someone's coming. Seriously, It's attention seeking, it's the"look how tough I am on my loud bike" that makes loud bikes attractive to the people who want to ride them. It's enhancement to a dangerous outlaw image that many of these people wish to portray. It's an intimidation factor - I'm big and loud, so I must be tough. I actually think it's hilarious that anyone would suggest that this is for safety. If safety is truly the reason, one should paint their bike red - the most noticeable colour on the road - and wear a full body kevlar suit with a helmet with a full facemask. Somehow, I just don't see that happening with many people (not all) who ride loud bikes. At least everyone can agree on one thing: The result of a loud bike is that people can hear you coming...It's just the reason why people have bikes that do this is where opinions differ.
exhaust loud on every vehicle - particularly smart cars
"why not make the exhaust loud on every vehicle - particularly smaller ones like smart cars"
What a moron, smart cars are electric.
Do research b4 posting.
LOUD PIPES RULE!
Loud pipes do save lives.
Yes, correct, some states (state) that HI-beams on motorcycles R 2B used.
Paint it red???
Yah lets paint it red, half the drivers out there have ran a red light because they wernt paying attention, sure that will solve everything.
Whaaaaaaa!
What a bunch of whiners. Lack of testosterone replaced by a noisy harley. Grow up, buy a muffler, and don't get your panties in a knot.
Anyone buying this safety crap? I doubt it.
While I'm looking around to see where the noise is coming from I might run into one right in front of me.
Of course I haven't seen anyone mention that these guys drive like idiots at the best of times, and if you see one after dark you can bet the driver is drunk or stoned.
Loud Pipes save lives
The provincial government has no intentions in dealing with the loud pipe issue. There is a city noise bylaw on the books now that deals with this issue. Whats next a bylaw for SCREAMING BABY'S? in grocery stores? Get a grip councilors,You can be replaced.LOL Bob T
So by their "it saves lives"
So by their "it saves lives" logic, I should have airhorns, or firecrackers, or klaxxons that go AROOOGAH, or scare cannons on the back of my very silent bicycle? Maybe a HUMUNGOUS HOCKEY CARD stuck in the spokes?
Face it. Your bikes have these tailpipes for your own pleasure at having them and hearing them. You could have easily bought mufflers for your Harley or Honda or whatever names on the tank, but that would have made you look like a complete wuss.
Does this remind anyone else of a certain South Park episode?
"Bike curious!" lol
loud pipes are annoying
Loud pipes don't save lives . Defensive driving does.
