A 31-year-old woman found unconscious in a Saskatoon police holding cell has been released from hospital.
In an update Tuesday, police said the woman’s medical condition has improved since she was rushed to hospital nearly a week ago.
Saskatoon’s major crime unit is now investigating the incident, with oversight from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice.
Police previously reported the woman was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine.
She was then found unresponsive in her cell around 7:30 a.m. and taken to hospital.
Hospital staff found an unknown substance concealed in the woman’s body, according to a police media release. The substance was sent for testing to determine what it was.
Police also noted regular checks were performed by on-duty paramedics, officers and commissionaires throughout her time in the cells.
