When news broke that Jeffrey Orridge was stepping down as CFL commissioner, I immediately thought the league would benefit from having someone with a business background take the reins.
The product has been superb this season, with the exception of coaches challenges. The rules made for negative press while some of the world’s best athletes were giving us spectacular performances.
Twenty-nine days ago, the league announced former player Randy Ambrosie would be named commissioner.
Fortunately, Ambrosie has an impressive business background. But he also understands the game and its fans.
On Wednesday, Ambrosie announced a much-needed change to the challenge rules, which will speed up games and make this already great game better to watch. The league couldn’t afford to wait until the end of the year, and Ambrosie made sure the change happened after listening to the ticket buyers.
If Ambrosie can have as much impact on the corporate side as he has already had on the football side for the CFL, there is reason for optimism.
