Saskatchewan RCMP have charged a man with a bizarre break-in near Unity.
Tracie Anderson’s 20-year-old daughter allegedly woke up in her home around 6:30 a.m. on June 3 to find a strange man coming into her bedroom.
“She was totally freaked right out,” Anderson said. “She was tripping.”
The man reportedly asked Anderson’s daughter to make him a cup of coffee, then left the room so she could get dressed.
During all this, the woman was able to snap a picture of the man with her phone, then locked herself in when he left the room. At that point, she called family members to come help her, then called police.
“It’s not stuff you expect to happen every day,” Anderson said. “You always assume it’s the city where this happens, that you’re safe out in the rural areas, but you’re not.”
The man left the home before police arrived, with Anderson’s daughter telling officers he left the property in a blue sedan after allegedly stealing cash and alcohol.
She gave police the picture of the suspect and they passed it around among RCMP detachments in the area.
At around 1 p.m. that day, police got a call about a speeding blue sedan driving erratically on Highway 16 near Waseca. The vehicle reportedly had a ladder hanging out of the trunk.
Police then got a second call a few minutes later about a blue sedan with a ladder hanging out of the trunk speeding eastbound on Highway 16.
From there, RCMP were able to find a similar vehicle parked on the side of the road just outside of Maidstone.
The man found in the car matched the description of the Unity break-in suspect, and some of the items allegedly stolen from the home were found inside.
John Nathanial Porter, 62, of Lucky Lake was charged with impaired driving, driving with a blood-alcohol level over .08, dangerous driving, possession of stolen property and possession of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Porter was held in custody until his first court appearance on June 5, and has since been released on bail.
The Town of Unity is located around 90 kilometres southwest of North Battleford.
